Southern Lehigh Policy Committee recommends splitting oversight of varsity sports from clubs and activities.

The Policy Committee of the Southern Lehigh School Board decided on Monday to cut the responsibility of running sports and activities at its schools in half.

The committee voted to recommend activities should be split between the athletic director and the appropriate building principal.

“The appropriate building principal shall be responsible for the administration of all school district sponsored activities and club sports,“ said the memorandum. “The coordinator of athletic services shall be responsible for the administration of all district-recognized Pennsylvania Interscholastic sports teams or programs.“

At present, the athletic director is in charge of club sports as well as interscholastic sports.

Examples of school district-sponsored activities managed by a principal include Honor Society, Future Business Leaders of America, competition cheering, robotics, dance team and orchestra.

Club sports including Middle School Track and Boys Volleyball are also managed by a principal.

During or after the third year of a club sport's existence, representatives from the sport may request consideration of the board for recognition as a PIAA team and district funding, but are not guaranteed recognition.

Management of PIAA teams will be administered by the coordinator of athletics, the memorandum said.
