UPDATE 3:45pm:  "I believe we found two additional workers for Upper Saucon 3!"--Lehigh County's Director of Elections Timothy Benyo

UPDATE 2:45pm: Lehigh County's Director of Elections Timothy Benyo said he's looking to send additional support to poll place #3. "The longest part is looking people up in the books and they already have three people doing books. I’m trying to find a person to send there."

UPDATE 2:30pm: Lehigh County's Director of Elections Timothy Benyo said he is sending a staffer over the the Cavalry Church polling site to see about speeding up the voting processs there. He acknowledged they have a long line, but said "nothing out of the ordinary for today."

Benyo said it's a short ballot, so the actual voting doesn't take too long. 
"The issue is checking people in that takes the longest and slows the line down.  They have 3 people looking names up. I believe they have everyone there that was scheduled to work."

UPDATE 12pm: Voters at UST Polling place #3 (aka Calvary Fellowship Church) reported extremely long lines and as many as six open polls due to a backlog at check-in.

Polls have shown the presidential race between Barack Obama and Mitt Romney tightening in the days before the Tuesday election.

In the last two presidential elections, the Republicans have ruled in Southern Lehigh, except for Coopersburg in 2008.

Republican George W. Bush won all three Southern Lehigh municipalities in 2004, while fellow Republican Sen. John McCain won two of three in 2008.

The Republicans’ strongest showing was in Upper Saucon Township, where Bush beat Sen. John Kerry, 3,686 to 2,804, and McCain beat then-Sen. Barack Obama, 3,796 to 3,387.

The GOP candidates also had their way in Lower Milford Township, although by somewhat tighter margins. Bush beat Kerry, 1,157 to 780, while McCain beat Obama, 1,137 to 879.

Coopersburg was a different story both years, with Bush beating Kerry by just 23 votes, 565 to 542. Obama won more substantially in 2008, beating McCain 615 to 489.
