March 23, 2015 Community Meeting Focuses on "The Dangers of Drugs and Poor Decision Making" - William Tennent High School Program is Open to the Public

Parents of Centennial School District students, especially middle school and high school students, and members of the public should attend.

Warminster---In Bucks County, as in other communities in Pennsylvania, heroin and opiate-related drug use are increasing. As drug dependency, abuse, and overdoses climb, concern among law enforcement officials, administrators, educators, and parents is growing. Community members are invited to attend “The Dangers of Drugs and Poor Decision Making,” a community meeting, on Monday, March 23, 2015, to learn more about the issue. Hosted by the Centennial School District, the session will feature Bucks County Assistant District Attorney Matthew Weintraub and Network of Victim Assistance (NOVA) Secondary Education Coordinator Steve Doerner. The March 23 meeting begins at 7:00 P.M. at William Tennent High School.

Drug abuse experts believe the spike in heroin addiction over the last decade is directly related to the availability of prescription painkillers. When users can no longer afford the painkillers, they turn to heroin as a cheaper way to achieve a high or prevent painful withdrawal symptoms. Historically, heroin use has been more prevalent in urban areas but is now pervasive in the suburbs.

The Bucks County District Attorney’s Office has been working to raise awareness about drug use and has been presenting its drug education and prevention programs throughout the county. The Assistant District Attorney will provide information about the dangers of drugs and will discuss their impact on decision making. Several videos and public service announcements will be shown to illustrate the devastating toll heroin addiction takes on its victims.
