When Fred and Helene Dichter started exploring their senior living options, they were looking for a community that would offer a future filled with convenience, security, and opportunities to stay engaged.
Ann's Choice, an Erickson Senior Living community in Bucks County, Pa., has exceeded their expectations.
"I was looking forward to not having to cook, having fun, and meeting people," Helene recalls. "But what really surprised me is how active and independent we are here. It's nothing like what I once imagined a retirement community might be!"
Moving at the right time
The couple's decision to move was shaped by life's unpredictability. When Helene broke her foot while dancing last fall, she had to spend months in a cast. Managing home maintenance and repairs suddenly felt overwhelming.
"We thought we were too young to move," she says. But that experience made them realize that moving to Ann's Choice sooner rather than later would provide the predictability they wanted in retirement.
Thanks to the community's maintenance-free homes, residents no longer have to worry about mowing lawns, raking leaves, or ongoing repairs.
Once their decision was made, things moved quickly. "We put our house up for sale, and it sold in one day!" Fred recalls. "We don't have to shovel snow or worry about repairs here."
"We haven't lost any independence--we've gained it," Helene says. "I don't have to paint walls or hang pictures anymore. We're walking all over campus, staying active, going out when we want. This is independent living at its best."
Fun-filled days
Now, their days are full of fun, engaging activities. Helene has joined a ceramics class and is learning to play mah-jongg. She also takes water aerobics classes in the pool.
Fred has become a regular at the on-site fitness center and participates in the ROMEO men's group, which meets for breakfast and hosts monthly speakers. Together, they are members of the community's Baby Boomers group.
"There's always something to do," says Helene. "There are clubs for every interest you can imagine."
Delightful dining
Dining is a highlight of community life, too. With multiple on-site restaurants serving made-to-order dishes, residents love sharing meals with friends and neighbors.
"Every restaurant is different. You never have to cook, but if you want to, you can. That choice is important," says Helene. "There isn't a night that goes by when we're not having dinner with one or two other couples."
She also notes the large, communal dining table found at one of the restaurants, where residents are invited to sit together and get to know each other. "It helps people make friends right away," adds Helene.
New friends
As a result of these activities, it didn't take long for the couple to create a new circle of friends.
"I think it's partly our [outgoing] personalities," Helene says, with a laugh, "but it's also about getting involved."
Fred adds, "I'm surprised at how many friends we've made in such a short period of time."
Connecting with neighbors who share similar interests and life experiences has been another benefit.
"In our old neighborhood, there weren't many people our age," Helene says. "Here, we're all in the same stage of life. I feel like I need these people as much as they need me."
An exciting chapter
Perhaps the biggest surprise of all is how empowered Fred and Helene feel.
"I never thought I'd move this young," Helene admits, "but we realized that it was better to come while we could enjoy everything, together."
As a result, her advice to those considering a move to Ann's Choice is simple: "Do it sooner rather than later. This is where some of the best years of your life can happen!"
