Health officials in Bucks and Montgomery counties are setting traps and gearing up for mosquito prevention this summer.

PHILADELPHIA — 'Tis the season for mosquitoes.

Those annual pests that dampen our summer spirits by biting us and making us itch at sunset, when people are out grilling and sitting on their decks, are back for another season.

Communities throughout the Philadelphia region are gearing up for mosquito prevention, whether that's spraying throughout the summer or providing residents with tips on how to spare themselves from suffering this summer.

Mosquito monitoring is already underway in Bucks and Montgomery counties.

Communities and counties throughout Pennsylvania have active mosquito programs.

Pennsylvania runs a comprehensive statewide Mosquito-borne Disease Control Program administered by the state Department of Environmental Protection.

Focused primarily on mitigating West Nile Virus (WNV), it operates from spring to fall through county-level conservation districts and health departments, using Integrated Mosquito Management

Middletown Township officials have informed residents that they may notice mosquito traps placed in certain areas this season as part of the Bucks County Department of Health’s mosquito-borne disease monitoring program.

The traps help monitor mosquito populations and test for illnesses such as West Nile Virus.

The traps are temporary and are typically collected within 18–24 hours.

Officials are also alerting residents that they can help reduce mosquitoes around their homes by eliminating standing water in items such as flowerpots, buckets, bird baths, gutters, tarps, and kiddie pools.

Montgomery County operates an Integrated Mosquito Management program that focuses on controlling both immature and adult mosquitoes.
