Ann's Choice Residents Personalize Their Homes

Custom Interiors Coordinator Sarah Babst recently worked with residents Ulrich and Cornelia Blumenthal to personalize their home.

This post was contributed by a community member.

At Ann's Choice, an Erickson Senior Living community in Bucks County, Pa., residents enjoy the opportunity to personalize their homes to reflect who they are and how they want to live in retirement.

And thanks to Custom Interiors Coordinator Sarah Babst, the process is easy! "My role is to help residents create a space that truly feels like home," she says.

New residents, as well as those who have lived in the community for a while, can choose from a wide selection of upgrades, including vinyl flooring, tile backsplashes, countertops, built-in shelving, and more.

Designed around you

With a background in customer service, Babst approaches each project with open communication and attention to detail, ensuring a smooth process from start to finish.

"When a resident initially reaches out, I like getting to know them personally--how they live, what's important to them, and how they want their space to feel," she explains. "That understanding helps residents feel confident and excited about the process, because they know I'm in their corner supporting them."

When she's not taking calls, she's meeting with residents for design consultations, coordinating with contractors and vendors, reviewing project timelines, or visiting homes to check on progress.

"Every day is different, which I like," she says, with a smile. "Keeping a close eye on project scopes, timelines, and progress ensures I can successfully bring each resident's vision to life."

Endless options

Babst notes that residents are often pleasantly surprised by the breadth of customization options available to them.

Popular upgrades include custom closets for optimal storage and organization, upgraded lighting for both function and ambiance, and window treatments that add style and privacy.

But the possibilities extend far beyond those options. From new countertops and flooring to fresh paint, elegant hardware, and even personalized shower designs, residents can create a space that aligns with both their aesthetic preferences and daily routines.

Recently, a couple personalized their residence with custom closets, tailored window treatments, upgraded kitchen drawers, and enhanced lighting. They also extended some flooring to make their living space feel open and airy.

From vision to reality

Following an introductory call with a resident, Babst schedules a design consultation to discuss their ideas, needs, and budget. Then, she presents samples and concepts, within budget, that meet their needs and help them visualize their finished space.

"This consultation makes the decision-making process easier," Babst explains. "Because I have fostered a strong relationship with them, they feel comfortable leaning on my expertise and the options I show them."

She adds, "I always prioritize functionality, especially since residents' needs may change over time. From there, we layer in design elements that enhance the space's look and feel."

Lastly, she helps finalize selections and coordinates with vendors and contractors to get the project underway.

"My goal is to make the process a seamless experience from concept to completion," she says.

A team effort

Although Babst serves as a dedicated point of contact, her work is supported by a collaborative team.

She works closely with Lisa Sicilia, the community's planning and moving consultant, to guide incoming residents. For many retirees, the ability to customize their new home positively impacts the moving experience.

"It helps incoming residents feel a stronger sense of comfort, connection, ownership, and excitement about their move," Babst shares. "It really turns a residence into their home."

Babst is also in close contact with contractors and vendors, trusted by Ann's Choice for their years of experience and high-quality work.

Home sweet home

"What drew me to this position was the opportunity to work closely with residents during such a significant time in their lives," says Babst. "I love being part of the process--helping them settle in and ensuring their space feels like home."

For Babst, seeing residents happy with their completed transformations is the most rewarding part of her work.

"What makes it special for me is helping design something that not only improves residents' daily lives but also personalizes their space, making it their home," she says.

For those considering a move, Babst's message is simple and reassuring: "It's easy and rewarding to make your new space feel like home!"
