WARMINSTER TOWNSHIP, PA — The Shenandoah Woods project is getting $1 million in federal funding as it transforms from a Navy Department site into part of the township's parks system.

State Rep. Brian Munroe, D-Bucks, helped secure the $1 million state grant to transform the former Navy Department residential site into a regional public amenity, including play areas, interpretive trails, a pavilion and reforestation plantings.

“Shenandoah Woods is a tremendous opportunity to turn a long-vacant property into a place where families can gather, children can play, and residents can enjoy the outdoors for generations to come,” Munroe said.

Shenandoah Woods was a site for housing U.S. Navy personnel and their families to be close to the Naval Air Warfare Center in Warminster.

For several decades, the U.S. Navy provided housing for service members at the 199 attached houses at Shenandoah Woods off Bristol Road.

It was decommissioned in 1997.

Following the closure, the Navy abandoned the houses, streets and infrastructure, with the neighborhood falling into disrepair and becoming an eyesore.

Demolition of the blighted and abandoned site began in 2022.

The Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program is administered through the state Office of the Budget for or the design, acquisition and construction of regional economic, cultural, civic, recreational and historical improvement projects.
