The Hartsville Fire Company will hold its annual 9/11 Flag Memorial and Memorial Service as 403 American flags will be displayed on the front lawn of the fire station in honor of the 343 FDNY firefighters, 37 Port Authority officers, and 23 NYPD officers who lost their lives while saving others on Sept. 11.

Two additional flags will honor local Firefighters John Kulick and Tristan Smith, who were killed in action while serving in Iraq.

The fire station will be open from sun-up to sundown, and members of the community are invited to stop by, reflect, and remember.

"We honor not only our fallen emergency responders, but all those who lost their lives in New York City, Washington, D.C., and Shanksville," officials said.

The memorial service will include a reading of the names of the fallen firefighters and police officers.

The public is invited to attend, and those in attendance are encouraged to assist with reading the names and retrieving the flags.

On Sept. 11, 2001, 19 al-Qaida terrorists hijacked four airplanes, flying two into New York City's World Trade Center and one into the Pentagon.

Passengers fought back on the fourth, United Flight 93, which crashed near Shanksville. The deadliest U.S. terror attack killed 2,977 victims.
