DOWNINGTOWN, PA — A Downingtown man was sentenced to 8.5 to 17 years in state prison for a "vigilante" attack on a 73-year-old man whom he claimed was a pedophile, police said.

There is no evidence that the victim was a child predator, the Chester County District Attorney's Office said.

The incident occurred on May 20, 2024.

Ahmad Al-Azzam, 20, originally attempted to befriend the elderly victim on a dating site, according to police.

He posed as a delivery driver, broke into the victim's home, bound his hands, and severely beat him while "interrogating" him, police said.

Al-Azzam used both his fists and a hammer to hit the man, filming the assault and posting it on social media, police said.

“The Defendant gleefully tortured a senior citizen and filmed his entire crime to get famous on social media," District Attorney Christopher de Barrena-Sarobe said in a statement.

The Inquirer reports the victim was a terminally ill cancer patient who suffered tremendously after the attack. He died in April 2025.

In a fundraiser, Al-Azzam's family said he was manipulated into violence by individuals he met on the Internet.

"Ahmad fell victim to individuals online who preyed on his vulnerabilities and desire to help others," his father wrote. "These people, pretending to be friends, manipulated him into actions that were completely out of character."

A separate, similar incident, which authorities said occurred in Mt. Laurel, New Jersey, is under investigation.

Al-Azzam was convicted of robbery, kidnapping, and additional counts. He has been booked at Chester County Prison and will be transferred to state prison.
