Detective In Chester Co. Stole Drugs From Medication Collection Box: DA

WEST CHESTER, PA — A Chester County police officer has been arrested for stealing controlled substances from a medication collection box, authorities announced.

David Maurer, 55, a detective sergeant in West Goshen Township, was charged with possession of controlled substances and theft by unlawful taking.

The incident was discovered on Nov. 20, when Maurer was in charge of emptying the boxes at the police station and at Chester County Hospital.

The boxes are part of the county's safe collection and disposal program of unwanted or unused — and potentially dangerous — medications

After Maurer emptied the boxes, police said he pocketed several pill bottles for himself before bringing the rest of the drugs to a collection site for safe disposal.

Authorities did not specify which drugs were in the bottles he stole, but they were classified as controlled substances.

Maurer was arraigned and then released on his own recognizance. A preliminary hearing is forthcoming.
