WEST CHESTER, PA — Road closures and additional traffic can be expected this spring as an aging water main is replaced in West Chester.

An eight-inch cast iron main, running on S. Wayne Street between W. Union Street and Grainite Alley, and on Harmony Alley between N. Wayne Street and N. Brandywine Street, will be replaced beginning March 25.

Construction is expected to be completed in June.

Local residents will be notified of any scheduled shutdowns, though Aqua Pennsylvania warned that emergency shutdowns are possible.

Aqua added that the new water mains will reduce the potential for breaks as well as discolored water. They'll also improve general water flow in the area.

Once the main is installed, officials said that the main will be chlorinated and tested before its put into service, before it is connected to water service and fire hyrants. Full restoration is expected at some point in the summer.

Work will take place from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. each weekday. Emergency, mail, and trash services will have access, as will residents.
