1. Developer proposes partial demolition, major transformation for Wyoming Valley Mall (citizensvoice.com) — A major developer is proposing to demolish about half of Wyoming Valley Mall in Wilkes-Barre Township to make way for a new stand-alone anchor tenant in the parking lot. Township officials say details are still confidential, but the project goes before the Wilkes-Barre Township Planning Commission tonight. If it moves forward, it could significantly reshape shopping and jobs for local residents.
2. Wilkes-Barre zoning board to consider plans for 27-unit apartment building (citizensvoice.com) — Wilkes-Barre residents may see a former sheet metal factory turned into 27 apartments and a North River Street warehouse converted into a grocery store and BYOB social hall, if zoning approvals are granted Wednesday. The hearing will also address several recovery homes, new group residences, home-based businesses, and porch and deck additions, with the public session starting 4:30 p.m. at City Hall.
3. Three Wilkes-Barre men convicted for drug trafficking (timesleader.com) — Three Wilkes-Barre men were just convicted in federal court for running a drug trafficking conspiracy that moved large amounts of fentanyl and other drugs, including from a local barbershop. Wilkes-Barre city and township police, along with Luzerne County and federal agencies, helped investigate the case. The men now face potential life sentences, with sentencing to be set later.
4. Man arrested on resisting arrest charge in Wilkes-Barre Township (newportdispatch.com) — Police in nearby Wilkes-Barre Township say a 45-year-old Wilkes-Barre man was arrested early Friday after allegedly resisting officers during a traffic stop on Route 309 near Blackman Street. Officers report he was riding an electric bike in the wrong lane, ran a red light, refused identification, and struggled with police, leaving one officer with an arm injury and prompting multiple charges.
5. HS ROUNDUP: Crestwood tops Wyoming Area in field hockey battle (citizensvoice.com) — Wilkes-Barre Area athletes were busy Monday, with the field hockey team scoring once in a loss to Wyoming Seminary and the boys soccer and golf squads also competing. At Wilkes-Barre Municipal Golf Course, the Wolfpack narrowly fell 163–166, while other conference teams from around the valley posted notable wins in field hockey, tennis, soccer, golf, and volleyball.
