Wilkes University receives $200,000 state grant for nursing lab (2822news.com) — Wilkes University in Wilkes-Barre is receiving a $200,000 state grant to build a high-tech nursing simulation lab with hospital-style beds, mannequins, and recording equipment. The new center aims to better prepare nursing students in a safe environment as Pennsylvania faces a projected shortage of more than 20,000 registered nurses, with completion expected by December 2027.
2. Libraries blend tradition with innovation to serve communities (timesleader.com) — Wilkes-Barre residents can tap into a countywide library system led from the Osterhout Free Library downtown, where a single card opens access to programs, nature passes, and thousands of books. During National Library Card Sign-Up Month, Luzerne County libraries are waiving overdue and lost-card fees through the end of September and inviting families to explore innovative programs for kids, teens, and adults.
3. Cabinet to celebrate 20th anniversary with hometown show at FM Kirby Center (timesleader.com) — Wilkes-Barre music fans can catch NEPA band Cabinet celebrating 20 years with a hometown show at the F.M. Kirby Center on Dec. 26, joined by Mike Miz & The Northeast Extension. Tickets start at $45, with member presales beginning Sept. 23 and general sales Sept. 25 at the Kirby box office, by phone, or online.
4. HS ROUNDUP: Crestwood, Seminary play to scoreless tie (citizensvoice.com) — Wilkes-Barre Area athletes were busy, with the Wolfpack boys soccer team blanking Pittston Area 3-0 and the volleyball squad topping Wyoming Area 3-1. Field hockey, tennis, golf and other matches across the Wyoming Valley Conference also featured Wilkes-Barre Area teams battling regional rivals, giving local fans plenty of scores and standout performances to follow.
5. St. John Paul Award presented to 3 veteran teachers (timesleader.com) — Holy Redeemer High School in Wilkes-Barre recently hosted the Diocesan Teachers' Institute, where three veteran Catholic school educators received the Saint John Paul II Award for 25 years of service. Honorees from Duryea, Jessup, and Clarks Green reflected on the joy of sharing their faith, watching students grow, and teaching kindness as the foundation of early faith formation.
