1. Safe Streets for All project underway in City of Williamsport (sungazette.com) — Williamsport is launching a federally funded Safe Streets for All plan to cut serious crashes and protect students walking to and from school. With a $356,458 grant, the city and consultants will target dangerous corridors like Maynard and Market Streets, adding crosswalks, curb cuts, bike lanes, paving, and better links to the Susquehanna Riverwalk.
2. Man wanted for allegedly lighting porch fire (2822news.com) — Police have issued an arrest warrant after an early-morning Aug. 19 porch fire on Memorial Avenue in Williamsport, where family members, including a 1-year-old, were inside the home. Investigators say surveillance video shows 35-year-old Saleen Cole buying gasoline and returning to the house shortly after a family dispute. Cole, charged with arson and risking catastrophe, remains at large.
3. 'Gateway to the world' opens at Williamsport airport with new airline (northcentralpa.com) — Daily jet service from Williamsport Regional Airport to Charlotte launches October 19, reconnecting local travelers to a major national and international hub. Officials say strong ridership from Williamsport-area residents could lead to more flights, larger jets, and expanded economic opportunities tied to tourism, business recruitment, and events like the Little League World Series.
4. Loyalsock student adds Space Force flag to high school display (northcentralpa.com) — Loyalsock Township High School near Williamsport has completed its military flag display, now proudly including the U.S. Space Force thanks to junior Gia Biacchi's 100-hour service project. A dedication ceremony, featuring local veterans and military representatives, celebrated the new flag despite rain delaying its raising. School leaders say the student-led effort continues a tradition of honoring service and community involvement.
5. Memorial Park hosted zoo in Williamsport for years in early 1900s (sungazette.com) — Memorial Park once hosted a bustling small zoo in Williamsport, drawing families to see bears, monkeys, lynx, and even a three-legged deer in the late 1920s and early 1930s. As the city's finances tightened and nearby amusements moved away, the collection slowly dwindled until only a single buffalo remained by 1933.
