LOWER MAKEFIELD TOWNSHIP, PA — The Lower Makefield Township Police Department is mourning the loss of a retired K9 officer.
Lower Makefield Police said that retired Police K9 Recon has died
Police said that K9 Recon served residents in Lower Makefield Township and the surrounding communities from March 2015 until his retirement in December 2024.
Throughout his distinguished career, Recon and his handler, Corp. Scherf, formed an "exceptional team whose dedication, professionalism, and unwavering commitment to public safety made a lasting impact on our department and community."
Among his many accomplishments, Recon played a critical role in the successful location of a missing child and assisted in the apprehension of a murder suspect.
"These notable deployments exemplified the courage, skill, and determination that defined his service," police said.
Following his retirement, Recon enjoyed a well-deserved life at home with Corp. Scherf and his family, where he remained a beloved companion and cherished member of the family.
"The bond between a police canine and handler is unlike any other, built on trust, loyalty, and countless hours spent working side by side," police said. "Recon’s legacy will live on through the lives he touched, the people he helped protect, and the memories shared by those who had the privilege of knowing him. We extend our heartfelt condolences to Corp. Scherf, his family, and all who served with and cared for Recon throughout his remarkable life. Rest easy, Recon. Thank you for your faithful service. You have completed your watch."
