YARDLEY BOROUGH, PA — The Yardley Historical Association is hosting a downtown walking tour on Sunday followed by
A Downtown Yardley Walking Tour will be led by historian Charlie Thomforde on Sunday at 2 p.m.
The one-hour walk will begin at the Old Library by Lake Afton, 46 West Afton Avenue.
Reservations may be made at info@yardleyhistory.org. A $10 per person donation is requested.
While strolling along East and West Afton Avenues, Canal Street, and Main Street, Yardley's evolution from a single gristmill to a thriving diverse community will be encountered.
The town's three bodies of water, its canal boats, railroad, and trolleys; its people; and life in a small town America will all be part of the story.
Author and food historian Becky Libourel Diamond will present highlights from her newest book "City Tavern in Philadelphia: The Founding Table" at the Old Library by Lake Afton on Thursday, Oct. 15, at 7:30 p.m. The program is free, and no reservations are needed.
The City Tavern is just a short walk away from Independence Hall.
It served as a meeting and eating place for many of America's Founding Fathers. George Washington briefly used it as his headquarters, and he enjoyed a grand banquet there on his way to his inauguration.
Becky Diamond will describe the ins and outs of the 18th century tavern, the people who dined there, and the kinds of foods and beverages that were offered.
The Yardley Historical Association preserves and shares the Old Library by Lake Afton and its collections of books, newspapers, photographs, and ephemera related to the history of Yardley and its surroundings.
The community is welcome to come and explore, discover, and have fun.
