Rhode Island Emergency Room Waits Among Longest In America: Study

Rhode Island emergency room waits are among the longest in the nation, a recent study revealed.

The study, conducted by digital signage company Optisigns, analyzed state-level emergency department wait time data published by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, according to a media release accompanying the results of the study.

"The metric used is the median time patients spent in the emergency department before leaving, covering all 50 U.S. states and the District of Columbia," the release said.

Rhode Island had the fourth-highest wait time at 3 hours and 45 minutes.

The District of Columbia was the longest at 5 hours and 17 minutes, followed by Maryland and Massachusetts.

Delaware finished behind Rhode Island in fifth.

"The top 10 states all record median wait times above 190 minutes, with all but one located along the Eastern Seaboard," the release said. "The gap between the highest and the 10th-ranked state alone spans 127 minutes, signaling that long waits are not isolated to a single outlier but reflect a systemic pattern across the region."

Hawaii was the state with the shortest wait time at 1 hour and 53 minutes.

Hawaii was followed by North Dakota, Nebraska, South Dakota and Oklahoma.
