Deputy Whip Ackerman Named Champion Of Youth By Rhode Island Boys & Girls Clubs

Ackerman was honored for her leadership and steadfast commitment to Rhode Island’s young people.

PROVIDENCE, RI — Deputy Majority Whip Mia A. Ackerman was honored by the Rhode Island Alliance of Boys & Girls Clubs with its Champion of Youth award for leadership and steadfast commitment to Rhode Island’s young people at a State House event today.

“I am tremendously honored by this thoughtful recognition from an organization that makes such a positive difference in our children’s lives, and I am proud to work alongside Rhode Island’s Boys & Girls Clubs to ensure our young people get the support, experience and tools they need to fulfill their enormous potential,”Ackerman said in a media release.

Ackerman, D-Cumberland and Lincoln, was recognized for her longstanding commitment to protecting and uplifting youth across Rhode Island, according to the release.

"A strong advocate for youth issues," Ackerman "sponsored a new law in 2023 to combat childhood lead poisoning, and worked closely with the Cancer Society and the medical community during the 2018 session to enact legislation that banned the use of tanning beds for minors," the release said.

"She also successfully sponsored legislation that changed the jurisdiction of child abuse crimes from Family Court to Rhode Island Superior Court, which is much better equipped
to adjudicate those types of crimes," according to the release.

“Representative Ackerman has dedicated her career to protecting and uplifting young people across Rhode Island. From passing laws that combat childhood lead poisoning to banning tanning beds for minors, her work shows a deep commitment to keeping youth safe and healthy,” Gary Rebelo, the president and CEO of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Northern Rhode Island, said in the release.

“Because of champions like Representative Ackerman, young people across Rhode Island have more opportunities to grow, to be heard and to succeed," Rebelo said.
