University Of Rhode Island To Train Pharmacists, Techs To Give Vaccines

The University of Rhode Island will offer immunization training programs for pharmacists and pharmacy technicians on this summer.

University of Rhode Island College of Pharmacy "will offer two American Pharmacists Association training programs on Monday, Aug. 24: APhA’s Pharmacy-Based Immunization Delivery by Pharmacists and APhA’s Pharmacy-Based Immunization Administration by Pharmacy Technicians," the university said in a post on its website.

"The pharmacist training includes both a self-study component and a live training component," the post said. "Pharmacists who successfully complete all required components will receive a total of 20 hours of continuing pharmacy education credit."

There is a two-hour online self-study component and a four-hour live training component in the pharmacy technician training, according to the post.

"Pharmacy technicians who successfully complete all required components will receive a total of six hours of continuing pharmacy education credit," the post said.

"Regulatory changes continue to reinforce the important role of the pharmacy team in healthcare, and increasing access to immunizations is a strong example of that impact,” M-J Kanaczet, director of the College’s Office of Continuing Professional and Workforce Development, said in the post.

“Training pharmacists and pharmacy technicians to work together in this space helps expand access to vaccines, supports public health, and allows pharmacy teams to meet patients where they are,” Kanaczet said.
