PROVIDENCE, RI — The Rhode Island Senate passed a bill to allow disabled drivers to get up to two parking placards.
The bill was sponsored by state Sen. Alana M. DiMario, D-Narragansett, North Kingstown and New Shoreham.
“When this issue was brought to me by a constituent, I was a little embarrassed that Rhode Island had not yet considered it," DiMario said in a media release.
"Despite the stereotypes, Rhode Islanders do actually travel and Rhode Islanders with disabilities are no different," Dimario said.
"The problem with the current system of granting only one placard to those who qualify arises when a Rhode Islander who requires a placard leaves their vehicle in an airport parking lot or train station but still needs a placard to access accessible parking during their travels," she said. "This is a simple bill that allows people with disabilities to travel more easily, solving a problem most other states have already addressed.”
The bill now heads to the House.
