GROTON, CT — A Connecticut man wanted in Rhode Island was apprehended in Groton, police said.
About 10 p.m. Sunday in the area of Long Hill Road and Route 12, a Groton police officer pulled over a Hyundai Elantra with Rhode Island license plates and a broken tail light, the Groton Police Department said in a media release.
"Officers extensively checked records to confirm the license or identity of the driver, based on the name provided, but were unsuccessful," the release said. "A female passenger, the car's registered owner, gave officers permission to search the vehicle for documents that would help to identify the driver."
An officer found a debit card and "determined it belonged to the driver," the release said.
Police confirmed his identity as Jeffrey Burgos,38, of New London, according to the release.
Officers learned Burgos was wanted on two extraditable warrants out of Rhode Island and one extraditable warrant out of Virginia from the U.S. Marshals Service, per the release.
"Additionally, the records check showed New London Police held four active arrest warrants for Burgos," the relase said. "All the warrants were found to be for failure to register as a sexual offender, which is a felony in Connecticut."
Burgos' bonds added up to more than $750,000, according to the release, and he was also was charged with improper tail lamps, operation of a motor vehicle without a license and interfering with an officer.
