URI Entomologist Devises Unique Approach To Combating Invasive Spotted Lanternfly

The entomologist suggested vacuuming up the bug.

KINGSTON, RI — A University of Rhode Island entomologist has developed a unique approach to combating the invasive spotted lanternfly.

In a post on the university website, Entomologist Lisa Tewksbury suggested employing a vacuum backpack to suck the bugs up.

"Tewksbury says that residents of impacted areas could even use this approach at home, deploying a handheld vacuum, then carefully disposing of the captured insects afterward," the post said.

The spotted lanternfly first showed up in New England four years ago and isn't going anywhere anytime soon.

The invasive species from Asia's main host plant is not choosy, attacking trees, shrubs and vines.
