"Heat index values (of) up to 103 expected," the National Weather Service advisory said.

In addition to the heat advisory, the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management issued an air quality alert from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Tuesday.

"Unhealthy ozone levels for sensitive groups are expected across the entire state," the department predicted, noting that the bad air can cause throat irritation, coughing, chest pain, shortness of breath, increased risk of respiratory infections, and worsening of asthma and other lung conditions.

And if dangerously high temperatures and unhealthy air weren't enough, watch out for rip currents, the National Weather Service warned.

The high rip current risk was to last through Wednesday evening.

"Dangerous rip currents expected, especially on south-facing beaches," the National Weather Service cautioned.

"Rip currents can sweep even the best swimmers away from shore into deeper water," according to the National Weather Service.
