An attorney has joined the Rhode Island Department of State as legal counsel.
L. Gregory Abilheira's prior experience includes 10 years with the Rhode Island Office of the Attorney General, serving most recently as a special assistant in the Intake Unit, according to a media release.
"He was previously assigned to the Narcotics and Violent Crime Unit, where Abilheira prosecuted high profile homicide, gun, and drug cases," the release said. "Prior to that, Abilheira served as a Special Assistant Attorney General in Newport and Providence counties."
"Greg's broad knowledge of the law and experiences in and out of the courtroom will be an incredible asset for us at the Department of State," said Secretary of State Gregg M. Amore said in the release.
"Time and again, across the nation, we're facing unprecedented challenges to some of our most important rights and freedoms – including the right to vote," Amore said. "The Department of State is committed to ensuring Rhode Islanders' rights are protected, and Greg will be a critical member of our team in doing so."
