Proposed Rhode Island Law Would Make Assault On Sports Official A Felony
Assaulting a sports official would be punishable by three years behind bars if the law passes, and longer if there are serious injuries.
PROVIDENCE, RI — A proposed law would make assaulting a sports official a felony.
The law would apply to sports officials involved in interscholastic or intramural school athletics, youth and adult community leagues, and any other athletic activity, including professional sports, according to the bill's text.
The new law would carry a prison sentence of up to three years, fine of up to $3,000 or both.

If the sports official suffers serious injuries in the assault, the sentence increases to three to 20 years behind bars or a fine of up to $10,000.
The sentence would also include restitution to the victim, up to 500 hours public community restitution work, violence counseling, substance abuse counseling or any combination imposed by the sentencing judge.
