Rhode Island Among Best States In America For Bicycling: Study

Not too many states placed better than Rhode Island.

Rhode Island is one of the best states in all of American when it comes to bicycling, according to a recent study.

The study conducted by the research team at Florida personal injury law firm Andrew Pickett Law placed Rhode Island fourth in the United States, behind only Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Minnesota, and one spot ahead of Washington.

"This study highlights that while some states have made incredible strides in protecting cyclists, there is still a significant safety divide across the U.S.," according to a media release accompanying the results of the study. "As more Americans choose cycling for health and transportation, it is critical that we prioritize dedicated infrastructure and policy changes to bring high fatality rates down to the levels we see in top-tier states.”

The Andrew Pickett Law research team analyzed data from the World Population Review and BikeLeague.org and ranked the 50 states based on a composite score derived from five key metrics spanning safety, infrastructure, policy and environmental health, according to the release.

The study determined Rhode Island was the national leader in infrastructure density, boasting 75.4 miles of rail trail per 1,000 square miles, the highest concentration of dedicated cycling paths in the country.

Rhode Island also maintains an exceptional safety record, the sudy found, as there have been only 1.1 bicyclist fatalities per 1 million people.

The worst state for cycling, according to the study, was Arizona.
