RI Man Charged With Murder Attacks CA Prison Deputy: Police

Austin Michael Medeiros, 27 attacked a deputy at the Humboldt County Correctional Facility's maximum security section​, authorities said.

WARWICK, RI — A Rhode Island man charged with murder in connection to the death of a California woman is facing new charges after assaulting a corrections deputy, according to the Humboldt County, California, Sheriff's Office.

Austin Michael Medeiros, 27, of Warwick, attacked a deputy at the Humboldt County Correctional Facility's maximum security section with an improvised weapon, authorities said.

Officials said the deputy suffered minor injuries during the attack.

Medeiros is facing the following charges: Murder, assault, battery, fleeing a peace officer and possession of a controlled substance, attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon other than a firearm, possession of a deadly weapon by a prisoner, manufacturing a weapon in prison, battery on a custodial officer and resisting a peace officer.

Medeiros was arrested last month while trying to steal a boat, according to authorities. At the time, he was wanted in connection to the death of Emily Rose May Lobba, 28, of Kneeland, California. Lobba was found dead in her home, and authorities say Medeiros was the last person to see her alive.
