MASSACHUSETTS — Monday's sunny skies will give way to heavy rain and potentially damaging winds by evening, according to the National Weather Service.

A fast-moving storm system is expected to head into Rhode Island and New England this evening, with the potential for wind gusts in the 25-30 MPH range for much of the state, and as high as 55 MPH in Newport and Narragansett. That could leave the door open for potential power outages Tuesday morning, with coastal areas getting the brunt of the storm.

The National Weather Service expects clouds to begin moving into the Providence area on Monday afternoon. Heavy rain is expected to start falling in Rhode Island after midnight. With temperatures in the 30s, some high-level areas may see a wintry mix and possible snow accumulation.
