JAMESTOWN, RI — Two Rhode Island teenagers were accused of forging signatures on nomination papers for an independent candidate for governor, Jamestown police said Tuesday.

Owen Lokey, 18, and Gracie Flynn, 18, were charged with providing a false document to a public official and conspiracy. Police told NBC 10 the forged signatures were submitted on nomination papers on behalf of Zachary Hurwitz, an 18-year-old gubernatorial candidate and the only one on the ballot as an independent.

"It is Hurwitz’s understanding that those signatures were rejected and therefore not included in those that were validated and certified by the Secretary of State," a Hurwitz campaign spokesperson told NBC 10. "Zachary Hurwitz had no knowledge of Mr. Lokey’s efforts in providing and submitting false signatures, denounces any efforts to subvert the nomination process, and has been cooperating with investigators. Zach Hurwitz looks forward to continuing his efforts to campaign for RI Governor."
