UK Delegation Visits University Of Rhode Island
URI hosted the delegation to building onblue economy collaboration to create jobs and protect marine environments.

KINGSTON, RI – The British Consulate-General Boston and the University of Rhode Island brought together more than 80 legislators, academics and industry leaders for a summit celebrating transatlantic collaboration on the blue economy last week at URI’s Fascitelli Center for Advanced Engineering.
“As an island nation, the U.K. has always looked to the sea, and today we're at the forefront of marine tech, ocean science and sustainable ocean industries,” British Consul General David Clay said in a media release.

“Rhode Island is a natural partner, with URI's outstanding oceanography research and the state's leadership on blue economy," Clay said. "Our collaboration aims to drive innovation that protects our oceans and creates jobs on both sides of the Atlantic.”

In the release, university Vice President for Research and Economic Development Bethany Jenkins spoke on "building upon current relationships with the U.K. and establishing new initiatives that would be beneficial to URI students and faculty, and the rest of Rhode Island.”

“The University of Rhode Island has played a key role in the state’s $5 billion blue economy by conducting cutting-edge ocean science research, preparing students for high-quality jobs, and partnering with stakeholders from industry and government,” Jenkins said.

The event featured a panel discussion with United Kingdom and Rhode Island leaders exploring collaborative efforts in ocean research, conservation and technology, followed by a reception to strengthen relationships and spark future partnerships.
