Barrington to 'Bloom' This Spring

Thinking spring, the Barrington Business Association to sponsor 'Barrington Blooms' on April 27 with a fundraiser the night before the event.

Barrington will bloom on April 27.

Sure, the Barrington Business Association knows it’s about as cold as it can get outside. But it’s already thinking spring.

The association met Tuesday night at the Tyler Point Grille and set April 27 as the date for the first “Barrington Blooms” event.

“It will include a spring store-decorating contest,” said Holly Smith, co-director of the BBA and owner of Hollies on the Avenue. “It’s a jump-start to spring.”

Smith said merchants will be asked to “beautify their storefronts to help the town look festive” and get involved in a contest with customers checking out the storefronts and voting for their favorite spring display.

To take advantage of the East Bay Bike Path through Barrington, she said, there might also be a bike decorating and safety competition in partnership with AAA and the police department.

That’s not all.

To kick off “Barrington Blooms,” Smith said, there will be a fundraising party on Friday evening, April 26, with restaurants offering food samples, the liquor stores providing wines, and businesses creating gift bags with coupons. Tickets will be sold starting a few weeks before the event.

“We are going to approach Flower Power as well,” Smith said, referring to the Barrington group that hangs flower baskets and holiday evergreen balls on County Road.

Smith said the BBA wants to hang flags and banners on the utility poles to encourage people to “shop local.”

The location for the Friday-night fundraiser has not been determined, she said. BBA is considering either the Bay Spring Community Center on Narragansett Avenue or St. Andrew’s School on Federal Road.

While setting a date for the new spring event, Smith said, the BBA set dates for its fall “Harvest Stroll” and its holiday-season “Festival of Lights.”

The former will be held on Saturday, Oct. 5; the latter will be held on Saturday, Dec. 7.

The next meeting of the BBA is Feb. 12 at RE/MAX River’s Edge on County Road. The primary agenda item will be “Barrington Blooms.”
