Barrington Woman Wins Amica Triathlon

For many participants in the Amica Triathlon that took place across Aquidneck Island on Saturday, it was far more than just a swim, bike ride and run. 

For female overall winner Lisbeth Kenyon, of Barrington, it was a critical step in her training path for the World Championship Ironman that will take place in Kona, Hawaii in October.  

Newport resident Joe Caruso beat-out his toughest challenger when he crossed the finish line and To show his disease that it did not stand a chance, his team wrote the words “F Cancer” on their calves.

“I feel really good actually,” Caruso said at the finish line.  “Except a splitting headache. That hurts. But I feel good.”

Jason Hancock will celebrate Sept. 24 for the rest of his life, as the finish line was the first agenda item on an important schedule. That afternoon, he had a date with his soon-to-be-bride at the altar. 

Hancock said he chose this day to get married because triathlons were a large part of his life. He did not want to push his luck and risk rather awkward wedding pictures, he said, so he entered Saturday's race as a team.

"I didn't want to get an elbow in my eye during the swim or crash my bike, so I did the run," Hancock said.

Emergency personnel Joe Karewko and Nate Frappier from Coastline Ambulance were happy to report the only injuries were two minor scratches, which were easily treated with two band-aids.

“The most common issue for triathlons is dehydration,” said Karewko.  “It’s cool today, so that is less of an issue."
