BHS Parking Lot Work on Schedule

D'Ambra Construction expected to start laying first coat of asphalt for new BHS student, faculty parking lots this week.

Concrete curbs have been set in place at the new Barrington High School parking lot being constructed this summer.

Conduit for new lighting and security cameras has been embedded in the base for the asphalt.

Crumbling asphalt that made up the former lot has been laid as part of the base for the new asphalt, a binder or first coat of which is expected to be laid starting this week after regrading and rerolling of the lot.

It all adds up to a construction project that is "right on schedule” for an Aug. 15 completion date, said Ron Tarro, assistant superintendent for finance and administration.

The $656,000 contract with D’Ambra Construction also includes the creation of concrete sidewalks around the football field area (dirt paths are there now), the reconstruction and doubling of the amount of spaces in the faculty parking lot on the east side of the campus, LED lighting, and 360-degree security cameras.

When finished, there will be 336 student and 78 faculty spaces.

Money for the reconstruction is coming out of the school department's reserve fund. By paying for it this way, said Tarro, about $175,000 in interest and issuance fees for bonds will be saved.

If there is a down side to this construction project, it is that participants in summer sports and theater camps at the high school have had to scramble for parking on Lincoln Avenue and other streets.

"Summer is really the only time to do this kind of work, though," said Tarro.
