My 'Dime Per Mile Project'

diabetes fundraiser and awareness

Sadly, with the declining health of the average American, Type 2 Diabetes has become a national epidemic. Now affecting 25 million people, diabetes has become a lifestyle disease that is not only affecting lives, families, but also our health care system.

As a fitness professional, I have vowed to take on the fight. In addition to speaking out publicly about the prevention of diabetes and the reversal of pre-diabetes, I will be on a fundraising quest like none I have done before.

Begining this weekend at the Cox half marathon, I will be running, hiking, and cycling for 135 miles in three weekends in the hope of raising over $1,000 in order to help fight diabetes through research. Although I still feel passionately about preventative care, the American Diabetes Association needs grass roots support in order to continue the fight.

The dime per mile project is simply donating a dime for every mile my legs endure during these three weekends. After the half maraton, I will traverse the Presidential Range in New Hampshire (22 miles in one day) and then ride with the cyclists for 100 miles on June 9 at the Tour De Cure through Southern Rhode Island. Remember to get your glucose and A1C levels checked. If you are currently pre-diabetic, please consult your doctor as you will be able to reverse the disease (hopefully without medication).

A lifestyle change that includes a low glycemic diet, an exercise program that includes strength training (better for glucose uptake than just cardio), and an interval cardiovascular training, as well as living a more active life will ultimately reverse your blood sugar levels and you will be able to begin living life without the constant worry of living with the disease known as diabetes.
