VIDEO: How to Do Correct Pushup
Watch Fitness Together owner and personal trainer Matt Gagliano do a correct pushup.
This quick video demonstrates how a pushup should be performed.
First, when doing a true pushup, your body should be able to come down to about a fist height off the ground. If you can't perform this, you should try to modify your pushup by dropping to your knees or simply do your pushup off an inclined surface such as stairs.
Second, notice what my shoulders are doing as I come down. I squeeze the scapula tight into my thoracic spine. This allows for a greater range of motion throughout my shoulders.

And last, my entire body acts as one unit. My hips don't raise up as my body elevates nor does it sink into the ground when I descend. You need to keep your body in a straight line from heel to head.
I hope this helps with your quest for the perfect pushup. It's a great exercise that works the entire upper body, core, and cardiovascular system.
