Councilors Support Visitors' Pamphlet

The Town Council grants $2,000 to the production of a pamphlet promoting Barrington by the business association.

The Barrington Business Association got some financial help Monday night with the planned production of a new full-color pamphlet promoting the town to prospective visitors.

The Town Council voted unanimously to provide $2,000 for the project at its monthly meeting.

“I think the concept is great,” said Town Council Vice President Jeff Brenner.

“I would support this request,” said Town Manager Peter DeAngelis Jr.

Holly Smith of Hollies on the Avenue, a co-president of the business association, actually asked for $5,000 for the printing of 12,000 copies.

The councilors chose instead to trim the group’s request. But if there is a shortfall, Smith was told to come back to the Town Council and make another request.

Smith said the pamphlet will highlight Barrington’s history and many attractions in town for visitors, such as Veteran's Memorial Park and the East Bay Bike Path.  It is hoped that the pamphlet, to be titled “In Barrington,” will draw tourists who will also become shoppers while in town.

Ads sold to merchants and other businesses in Barrington are expected to cover the majority of costs, said Smith. Sales will start in May and the pamphlet will be produced over the summer for distribution in September and October to chambers of commerce in and around the East Bay.

The business group also is creating a map of the shops and stores in the center of Barrington. The map will be distributed this summer to visitors at events such as the CVS Charity Golf Classic. The map is being funded entirely by advertising sales.
