In 1895, James Gordon & John Alexander Macphail opened a firm known to be a Family Grocer and a merchant of Tea, Wine & Spirits. With the help of their young apprentice John Urquhart, they would buy whole casks of whisky from single malt distilleries to bottle & resell. One can imagine that a great palate as well as strong business sense needed to be had in order to be successful in this endeavor.

As the business grew, J.A Machphail retired and James Gordon passed away-leaving Urquhart senior partner in the firm! Over time, with the help of his children, Urquhart started a Scotch Brokering business. He would go into the best distilleries, Macallan, Glenlivet, Glen Grant, & Linkwood (to name a few) to buy their casks, age it (often much longer than customary in that time), in Sherry Casks and sell it under the Gordon & Macphail name.
As time drew on, his sons, George & Gordon, and daughter, Betty joined in the ranks. As their Father retired, they took over the business, and as they have grown older, their kids have taken over. Today, the fourth generation of Urquhart's, twin brothers, Richard and Stuart, continue the family tradition of running the business.
Gordon & Macphail offer intense value with their Scotch. The relationships they have forged in the over 115 years of business offer them the best cask selections at the best prices. Join Grapes & Grains at Rhode Island Country Club with a truly special guest. Chris Riesbeck, United States National Brand Manager for Gordon & Macphail, will walk each guest through what they're tasting, how G&M acquired these rare barrels and share the amazing family story that is Gordon & Macphail.
