Gymnasts Aim for Dream Season
The Barrington High School gymnastics team goes into today's state championship tourney as the top-ranked team.
Barrington high’s gymnastics team goes into the RI Interscholastic League state championship tourney today at North Smithfield High School in a rare spot: the No. 1 seed.
The team ended its regular season with a 9-1 record after winning its first division title in 14 years, according to George Finn, BHS athletics director.
That’s a long way from the pre-season winter sports sign-up meeting, when it appeared the team wouldn’t even have enough competitors to field a team, according to eastbayri.com.

The gymnastics team also faced a season without one of the top gymnasts in RI for several years, senior Nicole Silva, who was out with an injury.
But two freshman cheerleaders were recruited to join the team to fill out the roster, according to eastbayri.com. And Silva came back about halfway through the season and the team turned hard work and perseverance into a top-ranked squad, according to coach Johanna Marcel.

The team includes freshman Emily Walczak, freshman Christopher Gilbert, senior Nicole Silva, junior Alexandria Personeus, sophomore Maxin Rasnick, freshman Alexandra Heiser, senior Caroline Huang, freshman Alexandra Khalsa and freshman Caroline Tien.
Today the team finds out if it can truly turn this year into a dream season.
In other winter sports team action over last weekend, the boys' basketball team lost to Cumberland, the top-seeded team, in a Division II tournament semi-final game, 58-43.
