New Home for The Tailor Shop

Tailor Benvinda Cruz moves to 20 West St. not far from Vienna Bakery, Tiffany Salon and the YMCA.

The Tailor Shop has moved to a new location in Barrington.

Owner Benvinda Cruz set up shop Monday morning, Dec. 12, at 20 West St. near Vienna Bakery and across the street from Tiffany Salon. She and her family spent last weekend doing some painting and installing new floor covering before moving her sewing machines and other equipment from 24 Bosworth St.

Cruz has been operating in Barrington for about 18 months.

“I love it here,” she said. “I was told there would be really friendly people.”

The native of Lisbon, Portugal, has lived in the U.S. for 10 years. She lives in East Providence with her four children, ages 19, 16, 6 and 3. But she would like to move to Barrington as well as do business here. Own a house to rent?

Cruz said she has been sewing since she was 13. Her mother got her started.

“I can make anything from scratch,” she said.

That includes slipcovers, men’s suits and wedding dresses. Bring her the material and you can have exactly what you want.

Tailoring clothes is her bread and butter, though. And she can usually complete a job within a couple of days, Cruz said.

Cruz usually handles each job herself, except in the summer season, when she is swamped with wedding dresses. Then she hires several seamstresses to help her.

“I think I have reasonable prices, too,” she said.

It took a few months to make a name for herself in Barrington, Cruz said. But business has been pretty good since then. She handles dry cleaning, too.

Her new shop is a bit larger, she said, but she is moving to West Street primarily to make space for the new Grapes and Grains liquor store to be opened by Matthew Amaral on Bosworth Street.

“He has helped me get relocated,” she said of Amaral. “He’s been really nice."

Cruz plans to keep her hours the same: 9:30 am to 5 pm Monday through Friday and 9:30 to 3 pm on Saturday.
