Three BHS Teams Stay Unbeaten
Barrington High tennis, girls' lacrosse and golf teams on course to clinch divisional titles.
Barrington High’s spring sports teams continued to thrive for the most part last week as the boys’ tennis, girls’ lacrosse and golf teams remained undefeated and the boys’ volleyball squad snapped a two-match losing skid.
BOYS’ TENNIS (14-0)
Barrington improved to 14-0 this season by disposing of Bishop Hendricken High of Warwick, 6-1, in a Division I-South outing. The Eagles swept the singles’ matches behind John Bogdanovic (4-6, 6-3, 6-1), Eric Pierce (6-2, 5-7, 6-0), Cam Voigt (6-3, 7-6) and Chris Ferro (7-5, 6-7, 6-4), and captured the top two doubles’ tilts with Riley Schwengel-John Volpe (6-1, 6-3) and Mitch Brosnan-Eric Weber (6-4, 6-2).

The Eagles claimed three of four singles’ matches and earned one critical doubles’ victory while nipping host North Kingstown High, 4-3, in a Division I-South clash. Pierce (6-3, 6-2), Voigt (6-1, 6-1) and Ferro (6-0, 7-6) all triumphed in singles’ for Barrington along with its doubles’ tandem of Ted Triebwasser-Joe Sacks (6-3, 7-5).
Earlier, the Eagles stretched their season-long winning streak to 12 matches by holding off Smithfield High, 5-2, in a Division I clash. Barrington split the singles’ contests, winning with Voigt (6-0, 6-3) and Ferro (6-3, 3-6, 6-2), and swept the doubles’ tilts behind Schwengel-Volpe (6-3, 7-6), Brosnan-Weber (6-1, 6-4) and Triebwasser-Sacks (7-5, 6-0).

Another showdown with once-beaten South Kingstown looms in South County on Tuesday. The Eagles gave SK their only loss since 2007 this season.
GIRLS’ LACROSSE (10-0-1)
Barrington outscored host Moses Brown of Providence, 17-10, in a Division I contest. Kelly Dolan collected 6 goals, Madeline Soutter rifled 4 goals, Rebecca Gasperoni totaled 3 goals and Cameron MacDonald contributed 2 goals. Mary Coogan also found the back of the net once for the Eagles and netminder Katherine Clancy rejected 8 shots.
Earlier, Barrington roared to an 11-0 lead by halftime and cruised past Mt. Hope Regional, 15-7, in a Division I-South outing. Dolan collected 5 goals for the Eagles, while teammates Chelsea Larisa and Gasperoni both netted 2 goals and Alex Portugal, Coogan, Ainsley Freeman, Sarah Bachetti, MacDonald and Soutter all contributed 1 tally. Barrington keepers Ali Javery and Clancy both notched 2 saves.
GOLF (10-0)
Barrington took two more steps toward clinching the Eastern Division title by out-pointing East Providence (155-175) and Rogers of Newport (155-212) at the Rhode Island Country Club.
Earlier, the Eagles blitzed Tiverton High, 150-223, in an Eastern Division match at the Rhode Island Country Club. Joseph Donnelly and Jack Vanier topped the Eagles by shooting 37, one stroke better than teammates Adam DeRiso and John Howell.
BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL (11-3)
Barrington shrugged off an opening-game setback and roared back to defeat Mt. Pleasant High of Providence, 3-1 (22-25, 25-22, 25-18, 25-21) in a Division II clash. Sean Farrell registered 12 kills for the Eagles and Evan Bulman accumulated 31 assists.
Barrington snapped its two-match losing streak by sweeping Shea High of Pawtucket, 3-0, (25-14, 25-9, 25-19) in a Division II contest. Senai Hagos (15) and Farrell (14) combined for 29 kills for the winners.
BASEBALL (6-10)
Cranston West jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the third inning and held on to defeat Barrington, 11-6, in a Division I game. Brenden McNaught homered for the Eagles.
Earlier, Collin Fay’s single rescued Jack Wenzel with the go-ahead run as the Eagles outlasted host Warwick Vets High, 3-2, in eight innings in a Division I outing. Pitcher Justin Ridgell picked up the win in relief.
Also, Barrington bowed to visiting Toll Gate High of Warwick, 5-3, in a Division I outing. The Titans struck for four runs in the second inning and were never headed. Franco DiRe pitched a complete game for the Eagles and struck out 4 batters.
SOFTBALL (1-12)
Cumberland High erased a two-run deficit with a five-run explosion in the bottom of the first inning and went on to beat the Eagles, 12-2, in a Division I meeting.
Earlier, the Eagles surrendered 10 runs in the fourth inning and were clawed by Cranston West High, 18-6, in a Division I contest. Meredith O’Connell shone for Barrington with 3 hits, including a home run.
BOYS’ TRACK (9-0, final dual-meet record)
Barrington tied for eighth place with 30 points at the Schomp Invitational staged at Chariho Regional. Ben Mitchell placed first in the long jump at 20-1.75 and third in the triple jump at 42-7.25; Jake Davis claimed fourth place in the shot put at 46-6; Dylan Verner-Crist clinched fourth place in the 3,000 meters in 9:24.7; Marshall Heitke took fifth in the pole vault at 10 feet; Connor Royley came in fifth in the 1,500 meters in 4:22.6; Tom Barry concluded sixth in the 800 meters in 2:06.9; and Jake Hill concluded sixth in the javelin throw at 145-11.
At the Hartford Invitational in Hartford, Conn., Charley Ionata finished fourth in the hammer throw at 160-7.
Several Eagles excelled at the Freshman-Sophomore Invitational staged at Cumberland High. Ionata topped the field in the discus (129-8) and hammer (162-6), while Davis claimed the top spot in the shot put (43-7), James Murphy bested the field in the high jump (5-2) and Patrick Cowden hit the tape first in the 300-meter hurdles in 48.6 seconds. Placing second for Barrington were Jack Liang (49.7 seconds in the 300-meter hurdles), Murphy (59.2 seconds in the 400 meters); closing third was Davis (107-5 in the discus); finishing fourth were Marcus Safranek (5:00.6 in the 1,500 meters) and Josh Adams (108-2 in the javelin); ending fifth was William Burke (2:29 in the 800 meters); and concluding sixth was Cowden (26.7 seconds in the 200 meters).
GIRLS’ TRACK (9-0, final dual-meet record)
The Eagles finished seventh with 34 points in the Schomp Invitational held at Chariho Regional. Robyn McFetters placed first in the hammer throw at 164-4; Alice Burgess concluded third in the 3,000 meters in 11:17.4; Teondra Silva closed fourth in the long jump at 16-0.75 and fifth in the 400 meters at 1:02.5; Meagen Verner-Crist placed fourth in the 800 meters at 2:28.1; Julianna Portelli ended sixth in the 1,500 meters in 5:13.3; and Jocelyn Smith came in sixth in the discus throw at 85-1. The Eagles also came in third in the 4x400-meters relay in 4:21.2.
Later the same day at the Hartford Invitational, McFetters topped the field again in the hammer throw with a heave of 169-0. Teammates Abigail Jones (11:28.32) and Molly Malinowski (11:32.39) took fourth and sixth, respectively, in the 2-mile run.
Several Eagles fared well at the Freshman-Sophomore Invitational in Cumberland. Stephanie Perry won the shot put at 29-7, while Shenielle Teixeira came in second in the 100-meter hurdles in 19.3 seconds and Kirstin Salka was runnerup in both the triple jump (28-7) and long jump (14-5). Kim Hoyt (1:08.4 in the 400 meters) and Caroline Coleman (7 feet in the pole vault) both produced third-place performances and Nicolette Griot took fourth in the 400 meters in 1:09.3. Julia Aspelund claimed the sixth spot in the javelin at 64 feet. Barrington also placed second in the 4x100-meters relay in 56.4 seconds and fourth in the 4x800-meters relay in 12:44.5.
BOYS’ LACROSSE (2-8)
Barrington slipped into a six-goal deficit by halftime and never recovered, falling to Portsmouth High, 16-4, in a Division I clash. Adam Hadley, Jack Ryan, Alex Douglas and Patrick Judge all netted goals and Connor Slye registered 2 assists for the Eagles, who trailed by a 9-3 margin at intermission. Barrington netminder Mitch Bayuk turned aside 11 shots.
Earlier, the Eagles had battled mighty Bishop Hendricken High of Warwick to a halftime standstill before falling by an 8-5 margin. Barrington was tied, 4-4, at the break, but managed just one score in the second half. Judge found the back of the net 3 times for the Eagles, while Slye and Artem Terentyev both managed 1 goal and Ryan Kelly and John Dillon both recorded an assist. Keeper Bayuk chalked up 15 saves.
