Two students from Barrington claimed National Merit scholarships.

BARRINGTON, RI — Only fourteen Rhode Islanders won National Merit Scholarships. Two of them are from Barrington. Richard F. Carolan, from Barrington High, won as a National Merit Scholar. Flora R. Baldwin, also from Barrington High, won the National Merit Harvey Mudd College Scholarship. Also, a student from Barrington Christian Academy, Elena C. Robson, of Riverside, won a National Merit University of Rochester Scholarship.
Nationwide, some 7,500 high school seniors are expected to collect National Merit Scholarships. So far, three rounds of winners have been announced. The first round included students who won scholarships sponsored by corporations. The second round named the winners the National Merit Scholarship Corporation chose itself. Rhode Island accounted for eight, including Richard. The third round added the finalists whose colleges gave them scholarships. Flora and Elena won that category. One more round of winners will be announced in July.
