VFW Honors Lazzaro, DeAngelis

Former police chief and town councilor and the town manager receive awards for their efforts on behalf of veterans.

Two well-known Barrington public servants were honored with awards from the Rhode Island Department of Veterans of Foreign Wars at the state convention on June 2.

Former police chief and town councilor John T. Lazzaro was recognized with a community service award. He has been active in Barrington for more than four decades, including as a staunch advocate for veterans in town.

Town Manager Peter A. DeAngelis Jr. received the legislative award for his efforts on behalf of the United Veterans Council, the annual Memorial Day parade and as an advocate for issues that involve veterans.Β

Lazzaro and DeAngelis were nominated for the awards by Barrington VFW Post 9742, said Adjutant Robert F. Smith.

β€œWe’re always asked to nominate people for the awards,” Smith said. β€œIt was quite an honor to have two chosen in the same year.”

Lazzaro and DeAngelis received the awards from Past State VFW Commander Vincent Scirocco.

Joining them at the awards ceremony in the Radison Hotel in Warwck were William Groves, commander of VFW Post 9742, and Smith.
