Woman Charged With Embezzlement

East Providence woman, 18, allegedly stole almost $1,300 from cash registers at Dunkin' Donuts on County Road.

An East Providence woman, 18, has been charged by Barrington police with embezzling almost $1,300 in cash from the Dunkin’ Donuts store at 256 County Road.

Janel Ramos, of 24 Mary Ave., turned herself in to Barrington police on Tuesday morning, Jan. 3, after an investigation into a complaint made last Dec. 27 by the store manager, Dawn Creighton, about a possible larceny.

Ramos allegedly stole almost $1,300 from the cash register by punching in ā€œan excessive amount of over-ring slips,ā€ said Barrington Police Chief John LaCross. She faces a charge of embezzlement over $100, considered a felony.

Ramos worked at the store for about 15 months, according to the store manager. She has been terminated.

LaCross said that Ramos would register an order, give back any change and then go back into the cash register and change the order for a lesser amount, which she would then ring into the register. To balance out the drawer, LaCross said, she allegedly would pocket the difference in cash.

It is not known how long she was allegedly stealing from the drawer. But a police investigation, including a review of surveillance videos, reportedly show her doing plenty of over-rings. In one case, police said, Ramos allegedly pulled out $77 from the register in one day with the over-rings.

Ramos was arraigned at the police station and released with a court date.

Police respond to ā€˜birthday party’

Barrington police were called to a home for sale at 486 Sowams Road at 11:26 pm on Wednesday, Jan. 4, after a complaint of loud noise and a suspicious condition.

When police arrived, about 15 young adults, all believed to be 18 or 19 years old, were running out of the darkened house. A police spotlight also showed motion on the second floor.

Police announced their presence at an unlocked sliding door, according to Police Chief John LaCross. A girl, 19, stepped out and told them that friends of hers had thrown her a surprise sleepover birthday party at the house, owned by her parents.

She said that unknown people had crashed the party and she had been trying to get them out of the house without calling the police.

Police found no alcohol or signs of drinking, so no one was charged. But they did find a sick young man in a bathroom, LaCross said. He was transported to the detox unit at Rhode Island Hospital by Barrington EMTs.
