Barrington Public Library will offer a two hour writing workshop that explores our relationship with food on Tuesday, November 19 from 6:30 to 8:30 PM. Dorothy Abram, a playwright and Associate Professor at Johnson and Wales and playwright Kate Lohman will present Food, as in Freedom! Writing From the Source of Our Humanity.
They will begin by posing questions, such as, How do we express ourselves with the preparation, presentation, and ingestion of food? How do familial, cultural, religious and societal influences reflect, restrict or enhance our relationships with food? What does food symbolize for each of us? And if food is an oppressor, an enemy, how can we find sustaining pathways that may lead to liberation, love and compassion?
Each participant will have the opportunity to put this awareness to good use by writing a story or monologue in response to these questions. The workshop will also include a presentation of The Cooking Lesson, a ten-minute dramatic monologue in which a relocated Bhutanese woman alludes to her experience in a refugee camp, while giving a cooking lesson to a group of Americans. The play was written by Dorothy Abram, and will be read by Kate Lohman.
