In 1953, Ray Bradbury brought the world a critically acclaimed novel about a
futuristic dystopian society where books are dubbed unlawful and therefore burned. Fifty-nine years later, the Mount Hope Masqueraders give this novel a life onstage in their presentation of Fahrenheit 451.
In the play adaptation of the novel, fireman Montag (played by senior Alex O'Hanley) struggles with the depression and confusion that clouds his life. He
has been a fireman for ten years because he never knew there was an alternative
lifestyle. One day, Montag meets sixteen-year-old Clarisse McClellan (played by senior Shannon Ott), who teaches Montag that thinking is natural and should not be hindered, and that books should not be used as kindling. This presents Montag with a choice: his safe, former life of burning books, or the new life of a criminal who dares to discover what books really are. Throughout the play, Montag must choose his path while on a perilous journey towards self-discovery.
Fahrenheit 451 will be presented at the Mount Hope High School Performing Arts Center Thursday, November 15 through Sunday, November 18. Curtain will be at 7 PM Thursday, Friday and Saturday; Sunday's curtain is at 2 PM. Ticket prices are $10 for general admission and $7 for students and senior citizens.
Tickets for all four shows are $25 for general admission and $20 for students and senior citizens. Tickets will be sold at the door only. All proceeds will go to the production of future Masqueraders plays, such as the spring musical in May.
