Bristol Police Launch Camera Registration Program

Private citizens and local businesses are asked to voluntarily register their security cameras for the program.

BRISTOL, RI — Residents and business-owners in Bristol are asked to join a newly launched security camera registration program. The program is completely voluntary and anyone who joins can opt out at any time, Bristol police said.

Those who join the program might be contacted by Bristol police in the future if a crime happens nearby. If that's the case, police will ask for a copy of security footage to help the investigation.

The registry is private, and police will not have direct access to cameras, the department said. Anyone who joins can remove themselves from the list at any time, and participation is not required.

"The goal of this program is to deter crime and promote public safety through collaboration between the Bristol Police Department and the community we serve," the department said in a statement.

Anyone interested in joining the program is encouraged to fill out a registration form, which will be submitted to the Bristol Police Department.

Bristol is not the only department to have a security camera registry. In September, Tiverton police launched a very similar program, asking the public to join the voluntary registry.
