Author Mark Wilkins chronicles the rise of American yachting, starting with the sailing race of 1851 when the yacht America was victorious over the British entry. This victory ushered in the golden age of yachting in the United States. Wilkins will trace the evolution of racing schooners, sloops, and cutters, discuss the evolution of the "sandbagger" and the growth of yacht clubs in America, and also delve into the social aspect of yachting. He will discuss, too, how the rise of American yachting was fueled by the Industrial Revolution and Reconstruction after the Civil War. Wilkins will also speak about the genius of Nathaniel G. Herreshoff -the Wizard of Bristol-and his immense contribution to yacht design and construction.
Refreshments will be served. The talk will take place in Blithewold's Living Room.
