"During the next weeks and months, I look forward to sharing with you my thoughts about the future of our great country," Chafee said.

Former Rhode Island Governor Lincoln Chafee might run for president.

Chafee, who did not seek reelection in 2014, announced in a web video that he is exploring a possible run for the 2016 Democratic nomination.

Chafee said he is motivated by increasing instability in the Middle East and North Africa, saying ā€œI don’t like where this is going.ā€

ā€œAmericans want safety, stability,ā€ Chafee said. ā€œThroughout my career, I exercised good judgment on a wide range of high-pressure decisions, decisions that require level-headedness and careful foresight. Often these decisions came in the face of political adversity. During the next weeks and months I look forward to sharing with you my thoughts about the future of our great country.ā€

Chafee has launched a new website, www.chafee2016.com, which lists four key priorities: helping the middle class, environmental stewardship, protection of personal liberties and aversion to foreign entanglements.

Rhode Island Public Radio’s Scott McKay first reported Chafee’s intentions on Thursday. In an interview, Chafee said that he will spend the next few months in Iowa and New Hampshire and other battleground states.

The final decision on whether to run will hinge on voter support and how fundraising efforts pan out.
