HMM Lecture Series Presents: "What You Don't Know About the Herreshoffs"
- NC4, Automobiles, Motorcycles, & Much More. Presented by Halsey C. Herreshoff
From 1800 to the present day, the extended Herreshoff Family produced notable accomplishments. While the Museum’s loyal followers have considerable knowledge of the more conspicuous HMC accomplishments in Bristol, they may know little of far flung Herreshoff activities, some of which had no relation to yachts. Halsey will convey fascinating stories of remarkable characters doing remarkable things. Much of that involved strong inventiveness, mechanical aptitude, and frequently daring push toward innovation.
Involved were a first motorcycle, automobiles, airplanes, baking powder, chemical superiority, and the world’s finest compact steam engines. For the part Captain Nat Herreshoff played in this wide mosaic of activity, Halsey will convey the similarities of the “Wizard of Bristol” to his contemporary Thomas Edison, “The Wizard of Menlo Park.” This illustrated lecture will include high points of the unique Herreshoff legend that is the subject of the Herreshoff Marine Museum.
Reception begins at 6pm; Lecture starts at 7pm.
