Hometown Hauntings: Tower Hill Road

Have you seen a ghost on Tower Hill Road?

A trip down Tower Hill Road in Bristol in the dead of night is sure to make the hair on your neck stand up, but is there really something out there waiting in the dark?

Tower Hill Road is said to be haunted by Native Americans who were killed during the King Philip War in the 1600s. Believers say ghosts can be seen charging over the hill and drums can be heard in the area of the white "X" that is painted on the narrow road.

Connie Ouellette, a ghost hunter, psychic and owner of Magick Mirror Gift Shop in Bristol, took a trip down Tower Hill Road a few years ago and said there was something there alright, and she didn't like what she felt.

"I remember walking halfway down the road and just stopping," Ouellette said. "I didn't want to go any further. All I could feel was chaos and death like I was in harm's way. I felt like if I stayed there or kept going that something could happen."

Ouellette said that in her years of ghost hunting, she has rarely felt that same fear, enough to force her to leave the supposedly haunted area.

"I don’t know the history of that road, but you can feel negative energy and bad spirits there," she said. "It felt like something bad had been done there. Something inhumane and it felt like there were many deaths."

Ouellette is not the only one who has had a frightening experience on Tower Hill Road. Dyanne Gibree of Bristol admits to having an open mind to paranormal activity and recalls one of her trips down Tower Hill Road with her daughter and some friends.

"We were parked on the road and the radio was acting funny," Gibree said, admitting that there was bad reception in that area anyway. "But me and a car full of giggling girls sat there in the dark with the windows open when we noticed the most peculiar fog that just followed the tree line. When it got to where the car was, it came up and almost made a form next to the passenger-side door and went back down. Then, all of a sudden, the girls in the back of the van started screaming because they saw someone looking in the back window. The poor girls were so scared so I had to drop them all off at home, but when we opened the door, there were hand prints on the back of the window. It was creepy, but absolutely awesome."

Gibree said not all experiences on Tower Hill Road are as active as the one she recalls.

"There were many times we went down there and just sat, but nothing happened," she said. "If you want to see something, you have to be open to it. But you also have to realize that just because you don't see or hear something the first time, doesn't mean it's not out there."
